Dr. R Balasubramaniam is a public policy expert, and development activist. He is physician by qualification. After his MBBS, he earned his MPhil in Hospital Administration and Health Systems Management from BITS, Pilani. He has a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University. He is the Founder and President of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) and Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement (GRAAM). Apart from lecturing & teaching regularly at Harvard and other reputed Business schools on Leadership, he was the distinguished Frank Rhodes Professor at Cornell University, USA. He is also a visiting Professor at the ILR School, Cornell University, USA and IIT Delhi.

He was the Head and Visiting professor of the Vivekananda Chair of the University of Mysore twice. He is also a consultant to various National and International Agencies including the World Bank. He has travelled widely within and outside the country promoting the concept of participatory sustainable development, which is contextually relevant and culturally appropriate. He is a Tata Scholar, a Mason Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School and a Fellow at the Hauser Center for Non-profits, Harvard University. He has authored six books including “ I, The Citizen” and “Voices from the Grassroots” and he also writes extensively about Swami Vivekananda and on development issues in local Kannada and English newspapers and in his blog at rbalu.com. He runs leadership and public policy workshops for Corporates, NGOs and the Government both within India and outside.
